Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Technologist for the Office of Information Technology. Reporting to the Associate Director- OIT Enterprise Application Services (EAS), this position is a hands-on technical role responsible for providing services supporting Business Intelligence (BI) data and reporting. The BI DBA works within the Shared Services Database Administration team and serves as a key resource for supporting BI reporting and dashboards, and the enterprise Tableau solution. Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to, query and performance tuning, ongoing maintenance, backup/ recovery, auditing, production support, migration, support and architecting adequate technical solutions and recommendations that best suit the requirements and needs. Responsibilities include designing, developing, testing, implementing and managing ETL processes. Additionally, this position designs, develops, maintains and publishes logical and physical data models, entity relationship diagrams, data flow diagrams, and a common data dictionary.
Collaborates, coordinates and cohesively works with Database Administrators and Business Intelligence Developers to support Enterprise Applications and deliverables. Facilitates server-side database development and client-side performance tuning, when needed.
Monitors database/application growth and server resources to ensure optimum performance and availability of BI platform resources. Routinely evaluates/implements improved methods or processes for administering and maintaining BI databases and the Tableau server instances.
Handles inbound database service requests from the BI team, providing priority response.
Troubleshoots minor to major problems on an as-needed basis, often requiring time sensitive response and pro-active communication to developers and clients.
Assists with BI strategy and evangelizes BI reporting and Tableau products to foster user adoption.
Stays abreast of the latest database, BI, Tableau, and ETL technologies. Participates in the BI community, in particular related to Tableau. Participates in forums, conferences, meetings, and presentations.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in MIS, Computer Science or related field and at least six (6) years of progressively responsible DBA experience with Oracle RDBMS and Microsoft SQL Server (2008 or greater) in a production environment.
Experience must include designing, configuring, implementing and supporting large highly available business intelligence environments, failover and database mirroring, live database troubleshooting, as well as T-SQL and PowerShell Scripts.
Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
In depth knowledge and experience with query, index and DB I/O performance tuning, Stored Procedures and SQL, Tableau and Enterprise OLAP Environment Administration, and running and supporting very large databases under high transaction rates (e.g. OLTP).
Knowledge of disaster recovery principles and practices, including planning, testing, backup/restore using disk-based backup solutions using Oracle RMAN.
Excellent organizational, analytical, oral and written and interpersonal communication as well as outstanding customer service skills are necessary.
Must be able to work collaboratively with other internal departments and entities, facilitate discussion, teach and train on concepts related to data retrieval, data analysis, data integrity and analytical information system as well as manage all DB maintenance plan activities including backups, indexing, and integrity/consistency checks.
At least five (5) years of experience with a database on a virtual platform, database migration/ upgrade experience as well as experience running and supporting very large data warehouse databases (OLAP, Big Data) preferred.
