The Department of Business Reporting and Systems within Business Services at the University at Buffalo is seeking a Business Intelligence (BI) Developer for strategically designing the framework to organize the information management and technology components used to build Business Intelligence systems that meet the data access needs of the organization. This includes architecting an environment that allows business users to identify business issues, formulate business questions, determine what information is needed, determine where to find the information, retrieve, analyze, report and take action.
The developer will support the Business Intelligence application (Oracle Business Intelligence (OBI), develop and coordinate data extract, translate and load (ETL) processes used to populate new and existing operational data stores and data warehouses, and develop new dashboards, reports and analyses for various customer groups across the campus. The incumbent will champion data quality, integrity and reliability throughout the enterprise by designing and promoting best practices. The business intelligence developer will:
Participate in development of the Business Intelligence architecture and design to support the evolution of various business intelligence systems and applications. Elements in these systems included but are not limited to dashboards, scorecards, analytical applications, standard reports, and strategic and operational business intelligence. The architecture should ensure data quality, data security and support reporting tools that are intuitive and high performing.
Develop data extraction, transformation and loading scripts needed to maintain existing, and develop new sources of data to the BI reporting environment.
Establish data access queries and use OBI tools, build dashboards and help in development of complex ad hoc queries and analyses.
Identify and implement solutions to enhance existing BI infrastructure processes and technology. This includes activities to transition legacy reporting platforms to new flexible BI solutions.
Participate in all phases of project implementation including planning, requirements gathering, development, training, deployment, post-implementation support and enhancements.
Utilize knowledge and expertise of BI solutions to monitor system performance.
Works with business analysts and act as a liaison between technical departments and business departments.
Partner with development team members to design, develop, support and maintain semantic (business) layers. The semantic layer translates the underlying database structures into business oriented terms and constructs. This will require working closely with Data Governance teams to ensure proper data usage that allows the business to make decisions based on high-quality data and well managed information assets.
Create and maintain documentation to assist developers and business users in designing & effectively/efficiently utilizing BI solutions.
Design and deliver training programs to business users on all BI applications.
Be asked to contribute to the creation of research, presentations, whitepapers, proposals, and sample applications that demonstrate how BI technologies can provide a strategic advantage to the university.
Be employed in a business environment which may require performing maintenance, development and related tasks during non-business hours, evenings and weekends.
Bachelor's degree in a technical, business, science discipline, or other related field required.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience working with SQL, databases.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience creating reports and analyses using reporting tools such as Crystal Reports, MS Access, Tableau, etc.
Thorough understanding of data warehousing concepts.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
Oracle SQL and database experience.
Experience using scripting or programming languages such as PL/SQL, Visual Basic, etc.
Experience with Oracle Business Intelligence tools a plus.
Hands-on experience with UB InfoSource.
Familiarity with UB business systems and related data, business rules, and processes.
