The Senior Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst reports primarily to the Director of Institutional Research and secondarily to the Associate Provost for Institutional Planning, Assessment, & Research (IPAR). The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst assumes responsibility for assignments that support the planning, assessment, and research functions in IPAR; the scope of the position extends from IPAR to the entire University community. The Senior BI Analyst plays a key role in interactive report creation; data extraction & integration for interactive reports, data visualizations, and ad hoc requests; data support for discipline-specific accreditation and program-specific surveys; further development of institutional and departmental-level performance metrics; and support of data and reporting functions for Faculty 180.
Ad hoc Queries, Interactive Reports, & Data Visualizations. Along with other Institutional Research staff, the person in this position will write SQL queries to gather and combine data to fill various ad hoc requests, especially those requiring complex programming skills. S/he will lead the Dashboard Development Team within IPAR and serve as a key member of the team charged with creating interactive reports that meet the needs of the university and its leadership. In both dashboard and report creation, s/he will interpret and make meaning of data and contextualize them for institutional decision making, thus presenting complex information in forms that are understandable to a variety of audiences. Examples of activities to which this person will bring expertise are: o Faculty 180 (ECU's faculty activity system): writing programs to update and create reports based on data exported from Faculty 180 and stored in ECU's data warehouse o Strategic Plan Metrics: building reports to assist colleges and units in tracking their strategic plan metrics; o Discipline-specific Accreditation and Surveys: providing data and analysis support to faculty for discipline-specific accreditation as well as program-specific surveys from US News and other organizations.
Data Management, Integration, & Governance. Data management (the development and execution of practices and procedures in order to manage the information lifecycle in an effective manner) will be an integral component of this position. Data management will include creating and maintaining crosswalks and code descriptions as well as developing and/or consulting on reporting views in ECU's data warehouse. The person in this position will help ensure data integrity, and help maintain and manage the current data structure. The person in this position will be required to integrate data from various sources to develop and maintain a coherent system of institutional knowledge and information. S/he will write SQL queries to gather and combine data and to document data location and methods used for data extraction. S/he will play a key role in the development of appropriate data views and models to improve the efficiency of data extraction and significantly reduce report rendering times. Data management and integration are important considerations of many Institutional Research projects, including Faculty 180 and decision support/departmental KPI interactive reports, and involve multiple types of data, e.g., student, human resources, finance. The person in this position also will actively participate in ECU's data governance program by assisting with the development of data standards, data governance policies and procedures, metadata, data definitions, and data quality assessment procedures.
Liaison between Institutional Research (IR) and Information Technology and Computer Services (ITCS). The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst is the primary point of contact between IR and ITCS for the design, construction and support of the data warehouse; monitoring processes to capture, submit, and download UNC system data; and assisting in the creation of data views and models to support IR reporting. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst works closely with IT analysts to understand processes, business problems, available data, and reporting/analysis needs. S/he translates functional requirements into technical design and specifications and leads IR in providing guidance/solutions for data storage and processing. Examples of projects to which this person will bring expertise are: o Automating data uploads to Faculty 180 (ECU's faculty activity system o Extracting data from the UNC system Student Data Mart, determining the best structure for these data to be stored in ECU's data warehouse, and storing/maintaining these data over time o Helping to launch and effectively utilize Power BI (Microsoft's suite of business analytics tools) across campus. (This would include making decisions about how data should be modeled to make reports effective and efficient.)
Other In addition to serving as IR's liaison to ITCS, the person in this position will cultivate positive and productive relationships with other departments and demonstrate creativity in recommending solutions for user reporting needs. S/he will represent IPAR on various campus committees such as the Banner Change Management Committee, the Banner Student User's Group, and the Enterprise Data Management Steering Committee. Working with faculty, staff, and student data necessitates the utmost care in data security and confidentiality. Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline such as computer science, computer engineering, management information systems, or information technology; or a bachelor's degree in a non-technical field with three or more years of relevant work experience
