University Advancement has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of Analytics.
The Director of Advancement Analytics plays a critical role within University Advancement by providing expertise, leadership, and support for analytics services. The Director will be responsible for identifying, creating, executing, and disseminating analytics projects that inform and optimize engagement and fundraising strategies. In their role, the Director is responsible for the creative and appropriate use of analytical techniques that solve problems, create opportunities, and make the fullest use of our constituent data to connect our alumni, friends, and donors to the University of Washington and its mission.
The Director of Advancement Analytics will lead a small team of top-notch analysts in developing new approaches to understanding donor and alumni behavior; transform, describe, and model a high volume of constituent data from multiple internal and external sources; advocate and educate on the value of data-driven decision making across University Advancement in partnership with central units; offer solutions and guidance to central and unit-based colleagues that rely on the insights drawn from a rich reservoir of data.
This position demands critical and creative thinking, forward facing relationships with colleagues who will benefit the most from analytics, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a strong desire to support public higher education. By providing analytical structure to key strategic decisions, this position will be ultimately responsible for delivering actionable insights and opportunities into constituent and donor behavior to support key stakeholders in annual, major, principal, and planned giving, Alumni & Constituency Relations, and University Marketing & Communications.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Innovation
Serve as a key business partner and advisor to the Senior Director of Annual Philanthropy and team as it relates to the strategic application, usage, and presentation of Advancement Analytics.
Drive the vision for Advancement Analytics, develop and implement a comprehensive program that provides data-driven intelligence to aid University-wide and unit fundraising and engagement.
Employ machine learning techniques and build predictive, descriptive, and behavioral models that are used to increase revenue, deliver time savings, and improve ROI throughout University Advancement.
Act as the senior expert on analytics issues; identify, prioritize, and execute applied analytics that deliver insights across fundraising goals including, but not limited to: contact acquisition, donation conversions, increasing value of average donations, and segmenting potential donors.
Work with central University Advancement teams to identify specific engagement and fundraising issues for review and analysis, and develop/create solutions
Generate new knowledge and previously unknown insights from University Advancement and external data
Grow analytics capacity and standards within the organization through training, workshops, and supporting skill development in partnership with Prospect Management, Research & Analytics, Alumni & Constituent Relations, University Marketing & Communications, and Information Management.
Develop, manage, lead, and implement major, cross-functional efforts with a clear focus on providing actionable constituent insights that drive engagement and fundraising strategies.
Work and communicate with a wide range of people - executive and senior management, and program directors - to develop and deliver analytic tools and services to achieve strategic program goals. Work in partnership with others in a collaborative or advisory role.

Program Development and Management
Supervise and mentor a small, talented team of analysts, providing opportunities for professional growth in analytics and data science.
Provide strategic leadership and employ project management best practices on all Advancement analytics projects; establish and communicate vision for projects, including alignment to organizational vision and strategy
Manage partnerships with central and unit-based colleagues in order to maintain coordinated and collaborative approaches to systems and processes.
Manage program budget
Responsible for vetting vendors and consultants when appropriate

Bachelor's degree and four to five years' experience with demonstrated competencies in data science, predictive modeling, fundraising analysis, applied marketing research, social science research, and/or related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for degree.
Demonstrated analytical, project design/management, and creative problem-solving skills.
Seasoned leadership skills and presence, with the ability to collaborate and influence people at various levels/areas of the organization (e.g. programmers, fundraisers, senior leadership).
Proven research and analytical techniques, emphasizing the ability to gather, evaluate and synthesize complex and large sets of data from various sources.
Use of data visualization to present information in a way that is clear and concise.
Ability to impart understanding of complicated ideas and statistics in a clear and simple manner to a wide variety of stakeholders, from frontline staff to Executive Leadership
Direct experience using advanced statistical software/programming tools and languages (e.g., SAS, Python, R), as well as Tableau or other business intelligence or visualization software is required
Ability to master new subject matter areas
Ability to think organizationally, conceptually, and strategically.

Master's Degree or additional certification
Familiarity with academic advancement and marketing in a large university setting.
Knowledge of alumni relations/development/advancement principles.
Knowledge of UW Advancement policies and procedures, including use of the development database software ADVANCE.
