The Cost Analytics and Decision Intelligence project team was launched in 2016 to understand the institutional cost of care for our patients. This team has been on an innovative journey over the last year to understand current state and patient care operations in order to develop costing rules reflective of patient care and resourced-based patient utilization. The decision intelligence analyst will provide support to the team in partnership with our selected vendor to define costing methodologies that will support our institution’s operational use cases. This individual will be responsible for supporting the strategic design and maintenance of the Cost Analytics decision intelligence application, and informing the capabilities of the cost engine to make business decisions.
This individual will serve a key role in developing innovative approaches in bridging quality and cost to realize the Triple Aim, ultimately maximizing value of care delivery at UMHS. Ideal candidates should have a blend of financial and technical experience, with demonstrated ability to function with a high degree of autonomy. The position provides the opportunity for development and growth within Michigan Medicine.
Provide support to multi-disciplinary teams crossing multiple functions
Serve as analytic liaison between the end users and decision intelligence project team
Translates business needs into technical solutions
Master understanding of BI architecture, functions, features, to be able to customize tool to specific user needs to satisfy business requirements.
Interview end users to determine requirements for data, reports, analytics, metadata, training, service, data quality, and performance
Work with data warehousing team and data architects to translate business requirements into technical specifications, and ensure that architecture is optimized for data needs
Work with end users and business analysts to ensure seamless integration of decision intelligence environment and business requirements
Collect and coordinate business requirements for value, cost, and performance analytics and ad-hoc financial reporting analytics
Lead development of data analytics and decision intelligence capabilities to support and fulfill business use cases
Data mine large complex data sets from various sources of dataTranslate abstract business questions into analytic use cases and visual reports/dashboards in Tableau
Audit and reconcile cost data, patient data, and other statistics and metrics
Provide financial data analytics support to clinical programs, performance improvement initiatives (Clinical Design), operational leadership, and levels of executive leadership
Support payor contracting by analyzing profitability of contracts
Demonstrated proficiency in technical, problem solving, and analytical skills
Experience using data warehousing and analytical database querying tools to support business needs
Has working knowledge in BI architecture, functions, and features
Has working knowledge of SQL and relational/multidimensional database structures
Ability to translate abstract concepts and business requirements into technical solutions
Ability to understand complex clinical and business processes and identify relevant data sets
Have innovative and creative approach to reporting, analytics and data visualization
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a proactive service-oriented team player
Ability to effectively communicate with technical data architects and operational leadership
Adaptability and flexibility to adjust to fluctuating changes in project needs

Quantitative experience or coursework in cost accounting and healthcare finance
Proficiency in Excel
Preferred candidate will have two to three (2-3) years of experience in healthcare and/or data analytics.
Senior Level: 5-8 years of professional experience
Intermediate level: 2-5 years of professional experience
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Business, Health Administration, Accounting, Finance or a related field. Computer Science and Information Systems coursework a plus.
Travel: This position will require personal local vehicle travel to various Michigan Medicine units.
Experience with BI tools (Tableau, Business Objects Suite, etc.), SQL and relational multidimensional database designs
Foundational understanding of cost accounting systems and former experience on financial planning and analysis (FP&A) team
Previous work experience with an academic medical center or in healthcare desired.
Background in Computer Science and Information Systems a plus.
Familiarity with MiChart/Epic interface and data.
