Reporting to the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, and in collaboration with the Directors of Admissions and Financial Aid, and the Associate Dean for Recruitment, the Director of Research for Admissions and Financial Aid for Harvard College Admissions and Financial Aid provides leadership and management of descriptive analyses and research related to policy matters in admissions and financial aid. Advises on issues relating to admissions data and systems as necessary. Serves on the Senior Leadership Team in Admissions and Financial Aid. Supports goal setting initiatives, strategic planning, and execution efforts for Harvard College Admissions and Financial Aid. Provides leadership, oversight and management of descriptive analysis and designs and conducts research related to policy matters in admissions and financial aid. Advises on issues relating to admissions data and systems as necessary.
1. Provides management of research operations, which supports admissions and financial aid policy:
Participation in FAS/Division wide strategic planning as it relates to Financial Aid Funding models and Financial Aid policy
Design and execute research and data initiatives as they relate to the Admissions and Financial Aid mission
Design, build, evaluate research infrastructure – as it relates to Admissions and Financial Aid data and policy
Provides technical and research expertise as it relates to SLATE (admissions and financial aid CRM) and admissions and financial aid policy
Collaborates and serves as spokesperson for Harvard College Admissions and Financial Aid across the university on admissions and financial policy and data issues (such as the Analytic Staff Consortium, collaborations with Federal Relations/FAS Communications on Financial Aid Messages, etc.)
Collaborates and serves as spokesperson for Harvard College Admissions and Financial Aid with national organizations on admissions and financial aid policy and data issues (COFHE, College Board, IVY Plus)
Design and conduct research
Assessment design, implementation, and analysis
Determine structure for research initiatives and recommend custom analytics and data collection as appropriate
2. Design analyses to review and inform admissions processes
Create original study designs to evaluate impact of recruitment and yield activities, including social media, visiting programs, and other efforts
Create and design research studies which allow Harvard College Financial Aid to determine trends relating to the impact of financial aid policies
Advise dean of admissions and financial aid on policy including search strategies, data collection and presentation, testing changes, etc.
Prepare annual budget and monitor expenses related to data and research
3.Manage and oversee admissions data reporting working with the Senior Data and Reporting Officer to produce:
Daily reports that provide demographic breakdown of applicants
Stats to help set recommendations for committee admission targets
Ad hoc reports for university leadership, faculty committee, general counsel's office
Data on historical trends of admissions and financial aid data

Develops and maintains relationships with alumni/ae, works with secondary schools and prospective applicants
Extensive travel, substantial interviewing, admissions folder reading, and full participation in the work of the Admissions Selection Committee
Manages the Senior Data and Reporting Officer including providing guidance and reviewing work as needed, conducting annual performance reviews and taking corrective action, up to and through termination, as needed. Interviews new staff as appropriate.

Bachelor's degree required, along with at least two years quantitative research experience in an academic or business setting.
10+ years of admissions or higher education experience.
1. Driver's license required.
2. The ideal candidate will also display strengths in one or more of the following areas:
Office productivity software: It is expected that successful candidates will have experience with the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
Statistical and empirical analysis: Statistical packages such as Stata, SPSS, or R; policy and program evaluation; survey design.
Programming and "Big Data": Experience with scripting languages such as Python or Perl. Interest in large datasets and producing analyses from multiple, unstructured data sources.
Data management: Data warehousing; process automation; VBA; business intelligence software; SQL and relational database design.
3. Advanced degree, particularly a research-based doctorate, or significant work experience preferred.
4. Extensive travel, ability to work evenings and weekends, substantial interviewing, admissions folder reading, and full participation in the work of the Admissions Selection Committee expected.
5. Work will require sitting, near vision use for reading and computer use for extended periods of time, lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion.
